Waiver claim strengthens cornerback room
The Cleveland Browns closed out their preseason with difficult roster decisions and a weekend of final cutdowns that trimmed the roster to its opening structure.
Following those moves, the team made a targeted waiver claim to bolster cornerback depth, adding Mekhi Blackmon to the mix and also picking up rookie cornerback Toriano Pride Jr. in a corresponding transaction that opened a spot by parting ways with EDGE Julian Okwara. Cornerback depth was a conspicuous concern throughout camp; Yardbarker projected the Browns could be in a difficult spot if either Denzel Ward or Tyson Campbell suffered an injury, a vulnerability the new waiver activity appears aimed at mitigating.
Practice-squad returns and developmental depth
After final cuts, the Browns signed a handful of players to the practice squad, keeping developmental pieces in-house as the regular season approaches. Si noted that those late practice-squad moves are a tell that Week 1 is near and explained why the organization opted to bring several players back.
Among those retained, Zion Washington didn’t see much preseason game action but made plays during training camp that stood out. Si projected Washington could be a short-term insurance option if the Browns’ safeties suffer injuries, a role the staff appears to have in mind as they stock depth behind the starters.
Nathaniel Watson remains part of the Browns’ defensive picture after appearing in 14 games last season. Si offered the view that Watson showed steady improvement at linebacker with each snap and that his upside is a reason the Browns continue to back him as a developing contributor.
Kole Wilson also returned to the organization’s fold; the team felt comfortable keeping Wilson around after he did enough in camp and the preseason to warrant another season of development on Cleveland’s roster-management radar.
The cumulative effect of the weekend’s trimming and subsequent signings is a roster that balances veteran depth moves with an eye toward internal growth. Si projected the Browns seem primed and ready for the 2026-27 campaign as the regular season approaches, while the front office’s late-week maneuvering signals a desire to shore up specific shortfalls discovered in training camp.
For now, Cleveland’s mix of waiver additions and practice-squad retentions gives the coaching staff flexibility: added cover at cornerback through the waiver wire and a group of young, familiar players available to step in or grow into larger roles as the season unfolds.
