Official ruling and injury status
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially ruled Baker Mayfield out for Week 5 on Wednesday after he suffered a dislocated thumb, the team announced. Mayfield did not practice during the week and will be unavailable for Thursday night's primetime game.
Newsweek projects Mayfield could miss roughly three to six weeks with the thumb injury and noted that his return will hinge on whether he can securely grip the football with his throwing hand.
Immediate lineup change and team context
With Mayfield sidelined, the Buccaneers will again turn to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels as their starter — Daniels’ second straight start after replacing Mayfield in Week 4, Sports Illustrated reported. Tampa Bay enters the game 0-4 this season.
Mayfield’s on-field production this year includes a 63.5 percent completion rate for 615 yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions, a statistical line documented by Sports Illustrated.
Odds and broader implications
Despite Mayfield’s absence, Sports Illustrated noted that betting lines for Thursday night have moved in Tampa Bay’s direction. The same reporting also highlights the broader erosion of expectations for the team: the Buccaneers’ odds to win the Super Bowl have fallen to +15000 following the 0-4 start.
The decision to start Daniels again places immediate pressure on Tampa Bay’s offense to generate consistency without Mayfield while the club navigates the short-term recovery timeline laid out by medical and reporting projections.
Coaches and teammates will now prepare Jalon Daniels for another primetime assignment, while the organization monitors Mayfield’s rehab timeline and his ability to return to play when he can handle the mechanics of throwing without limitation.
