Caleb Williams delivered a performance that rewrote the record book in the Chicago Bears' 59-37 season-opening victory over the Carolina Panthers. The 24-year-old completed 21-of-29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdown passes while rushing 10 times for 65 yards and two rushing scores.
Williams became the first player in franchise history to record at least 200 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 50 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the same game. The NFL also lists him as only the fourth player in league history to finish a game with at least 250 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, two passing TDs, two rushing TDs and a rating of 120-or-higher — a group that includes Josh Allen, Cam Newton and Michael Vick.
The offense exploded for 59 points on the road, one of the highest-scoring performances in Bears history, and Williams was a central figure in that output with a 124.1 rating in the game.
Postgame stance and defensive focus
Despite the eye-popping final score, Williams was far from satisfied after the win. “This is going to be kind of our worst game,” he said, adding that points didn’t tell the whole story. He singled out execution, blocking and penalties as areas that need work.
Those concerns extend beyond Williams' remarks. The Bears’ offense clearly clicked, but the defensive side of the ball showed vulnerabilities that coaching staff must correct. Ben Johnson and his staff will look to address those issues in the build-up to the next game, with adjustments expected on assignments and fundamentals.
The win accomplished the immediate objective — starting the season 1-0 — but Williams’ blunt assessment set a different tone. Rather than reveling in the franchise’s big opening-day output, he set a high bar for improvement and execution as the team prepares to follow up a dominant offensive showing with cleaner, more consistent football on both sides of the ball.
