Sent home hours before kickoff
Joey Porter Jr. was ruled out of the Cowboys' Thursday night game against the Buccaneers after Dallas listed him inactive with an illness less than two hours before kickoff.
ESPN’s Jane Slater reported Porter was “very sick” when he reached the facility and the team sent him home; NFL insider Mike Garafolo added that Porter had been vomiting with a bad virus.
Management response and implications for the secondary
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones addressed the late scratch prior to kickoff, calling it “disappointing (he’s not playing tonight), but we’ll have to overcome it.” He added, “We got our work cut out for us,” signaling the team’s concern about replacing Porter on short notice.
The absence carries weight beyond a single night. The Cowboys acquired Porter in a trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 1, and he played 25 defensive snaps in his Cowboys debut but did not record a box-score statistic. That limited on-field experience with his new teammates meant the club was still integrating him into its secondary rotation when illness forced him off the active list.
With Porter unavailable, the Cowboys will go forward without the extra depth they had added via the Oct. 1 trade, leaving the secondary to adjust in real time. Management’s public remarks convey both frustration and the need for immediate adjustments, emphasizing the challenge of reshuffling roles during a game-week timeline.
Porter’s inactive designation ensures he will not play this week, and the club will evaluate his status moving forward as he recovers from the reported virus.
