Eagles Adjust Offensive Line as Lane Johnson Retires and Jurgens is Traded

Immediate shakeup: Johnson out, Jurgens traded, Bell takes over

Eagles’ offensive line pivots quickly after Lane Johnson retires; Markel Bell steps into right tackle role

Lane Johnson’s sudden decision to retire has forced the Philadelphia Eagles to reshuffle their offensive line midseason, handing a pivotal role to rookie Markel Bell. Bell confirmed he is now the full-time successor at right tackle and said the change “suddenly” altered his role with the team.

The Eagles also moved on from Cam Jurgens, who was traded to the Baltimore Ravens for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. That transaction, combined with Johnson’s departure, leaves the unit with one firmly established piece — Jordan Mailata — and several new starters in key spots.

Jordan Mailata will remain the left tackle starter, and Tyler Steen will continue as the right guard starter. Those spots are set as the Eagles attempt to steady an offensive front that lost two familiar faces in quick succession.

How the new-look line is settling in

Bell has leaned on the short time he spent with Johnson. He said Johnson passed along “a lot of wisdom” during their months as teammates, singling out one line of advice he’ll carry forward: “Don’t make the game bigger than it is.” Bell added bluntly, “At the end of the day, I’ve got to go out there and do my job,” and declared, “Now that he’s gone, I’m full-time the man for the job.”

Bell’s first extended duty came unexpectedly in the Eagles’ 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4. He was credited with surrendering six pressures and three sacks, numbers that raise natural concerns for a rookie thrown into the deep end. Even so, coaches and staff saw encouraging signs: McGonigal noted Bell “flashed in the run game” and “showed a lot of promise” against a Rams front expected to be among the league’s best.

Bell described the moment he learned of Johnson’s retirement as surreal — he was napping when his phone started “blowing up.” “Everybody was just texting me saying that Lane was retiring,” Bell said. “I was shocked at first. I didn’t know how to react. I honestly thought I was getting pranked.”

Projected starters and lingering uncertainty

While several positions are now clear, others remain in transition. Drew Kendall is projected to remain at center after stepping into Jurgens’ role earlier in the season; Sporting News described Kendall as likely to stay there given his play since taking over. Sporting News also projected that Willie Lampkin will likely start at left guard after an impressive preseason and training camp.

Those projections, combined with the confirmed starters — Mailata at left tackle, Steen at right guard and Bell at right tackle — paint a new-look five-man unit that will be judged quickly as the Eagles navigate the next stretch of opponents.

The early snapshot is mixed: a veteran anchor at left tackle, a rookie right tackle working through expected growing pains, and interior pieces settling into roles under pressure. How well Bell responds to the technical and mental demands of full-time starting duty will be the clearest barometer of whether this group can find continuity after the midseason upheaval.

For now, the Eagles are operating with a refreshed depth chart and a young core tasked with holding the line — a test that begins immediately and will define the unit’s short-term trajectory. Bell’s message is simple and direct: the focus is on execution, not narrative. “Seize the opportunity that I’ve got,” he said.
