The Philadelphia Eagles placed rookie Eli Stowers on injured reserve Saturday after downgrading him to out for Sunday’s season opener with quadriceps and hamstring injuries, the team announced as it finalized roster moves ahead of the game.
Imaging revealed a strain in the quadriceps that will keep Stowers sidelined for a multi-week window. Zach Berman of The Athletic reported the imaging showed a strain that would “require a weeks-long absence.” The IR move officially removes Stowers from the active roster and forces the Eagles to lean on experienced pieces while he recovers.
Stowers’ placement on IR follows an already crowded situation at the position: he will join Grant Calcaterra on injured reserve, Yardbarker reported, shrinking Philadelphia’s stable of younger options behind Dallas Goedert. The team called up wide receiver Britain Covey as a gameday practice-squad elevation in the same transaction slate.
Yahoo! News reported Stowers must miss at least four games under the injured-reserve designation; that timeline would make Week 5 the earliest practical opportunity for him to return, provided he is medically cleared and officially designated to come back. Yahoo! News also noted the Eagles have veteran depth available and are unlikely to rush the rookie back before he’s fully healthy.
For the immediate future, Dallas Goedert remains the clear starter at his position, and Philadelphia’s veteran options will shoulder the workload while Stowers is unavailable. The move reduces short-term developmental opportunities for the rookie and delays any on-field evaluation the team hoped to get in the season’s first month.

From a roster-construction perspective, the Eagles’ decision to use an IR designation buys time to manage the 53-man roster without an injured rookie occupying an immediate spot. It also places a premium on health and continuity around Goedert as Philadelphia navigates a slate of early-season opponents.
The club’s timetable for Stowers will depend on his recovery and any designation to return; for now, the Eagles will proceed into Week 1 with their established starter and veteran reinforcements while the rookie begins his rehab.
