The New York Giants released wide receiver Darius Slayton on Monday, a surprise roster move that came just days before the team’s season opener on Sunday Night Football. The organization’s decision generated immediate financial clarity: cutting Slayton cleared roughly $3 million in cap space this year. Giants officials explored a trade for Slayton earlier in the offseason, but those efforts did not materialize and the team ultimately opted to release him.
Career production and reasons behind the cut
Slayton leaves East Rutherford after seven seasons with the franchise. His Giants tenure began in 2019 when the team selected him in the fifth round of the draft, and he finished his time in New York with 296 catches for 4,435 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns.
The move was not entirely unexpected inside the building. Slayton had been at the bottom of the depth chart heading into the season, and the Giants added multiple receiving options this offseason — including Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin in early free agency and veterans Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios in June — moves that crowded the receiver room.
