Medical update and practice requirements

Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left elbow in Washington Commanders' Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, is on track to be available for the club's Week 5 home game against the New York Giants if he completes a single full practice this week.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Daniels "only needs" one full practice participation during the week to be cleared to play, a development the team views as a positive sign for Sunday. Daniels has not played since the Sept. 20 injury and missed Washington's Week 3 win over the Seattle Seahawks and the Week 4 loss to the Indianapolis Colts in London.
Coach Dan Quinn confirmed the team would tailor practice work this week to protect Daniels' elbow. Per Mitchell Tischler of Monumental Sports Network, Quinn said the Commanders plan to "work on some things in practice this week to further help" Daniels protect his injured elbow.
Reports also note this is a recurrence: Daniels dislocated the same elbow last season, a setback that limited him to seven starts before he was shut down after an aggravation. The team now expects him to wear a protective brace on the elbow during games for the remainder of the campaign.
The Sun projected that Daniels would practice in full Wednesday through Friday in the hope he is ready for Sunday; that account is presented as a projection rather than an established plan.
Quarterback-room implications for Week 5

Washington's desire to have Daniels available this week is intensified by an injury to backup Marcus Mariota, who suffered an injury in Week 4 and is likely to miss some time. That situation has created urgency to stabilize the quarterback position for the Giants matchup.
With Daniels the team's starter when healthy, his potential return would provide the most direct route to continuity for the offense. The Commanders' coaching staff has clearly prioritized protecting the injured elbow in practice and preparing a game plan that accounts for the brace Daniels is expected to wear.
Final availability, however, will hinge on the coming days. The single full-practice threshold identified by ESPN sets a clear, concrete bar the team and player must clear to have Daniels under center Sunday.
Washington's status at quarterback will become definitive only after the practice reports and the team's in-week decisions; until then the situation remains conditional on Daniels meeting that participation requirement and the Commanders' medical staff signing off on game readiness.
