Chip Trayanum was taken to a local hospital on Aug. 29 after suffering a neck injury late in the first half of the preseason game against the New York Giants, leaving a growing roster battle for the Jets in flux.
Scans, condition and immediate response
Trayanum was injured on the final play of the first half and did not return to the game. Medical staff placed him in a neck brace and carted him from the field; the team confirmed he was conscious, talking and able to move his arms and legs before leaving for additional testing.
ESPN’s Rick Cimini posted on X that Trayanum would “undergo further evaluation,” and that early scans had come back clean. “All scans have been negative to this point, and there’s optimism that he avoided serious injury,” Cimini wrote.
Coach Aaron Glenn expressed confidence about Trayanum’s immediate outlook after the game, saying, “I think he’ll be just fine,” as relayed by the Associated Press.
Immediate roster implications
The timing of the injury complicates Trayanum’s roster chances. Yardbarker reported that he was fighting for a contract and a chance to prove he belongs in the NFL, and that he entered the preseason finale vying for a spot behind Breece Hall, Braelon Allen, Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu.
Trayanum had received extended reps in the preseason finale because of absences and limitations among the other backs, finishing the game with 12 carries for 38 yards and a touchdown before the injury. Those snaps had reinforced his status as one of the team's more promising undrafted free agents; The Athletic ranked him among the Jets’ better UDFA chances to make the roster during camp.
Trayanum finished his college career with 2,272 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns, highlighted by a 1,015-yard, 12-touchdown season at Toledo that earned First-team All-MAC honors, and he scored the game-winning touchdown with one second left for Ohio State in a 17-14 win over Notre Dame in September 2023. Despite that production, he went undrafted in 2026 and signed with the Jets in May.
