Health and short-term availability

Joey Porter Jr. told reporters he plans to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season but that precisely when he will return is still undecided as he continues to ramp up his conditioning.
The fourth-year pro sat out Pittsburgh's first two games. McCarthy said he held Porter out of the opener against Atlanta, and Porter watched the loss in New England from the sideline because of back pain.
Despite the missed games, Porter reported progress in practice. He said he was able to do “everything” in a recent session and that the work went “smooth,” though the back issue remains something that occasionally flares up and can dictate his availability.
Porter said he “definitely” sees himself playing at some point this season and didn't rule out making his 2026 debut on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. He said he plans to play but the timing is uncertain and he continues to ramp up; he also said he was able to do “everything” in practice and that it went “smooth.” The cornerback is still dealing with a back issue that occasionally flares up.
Contract backdrop and locker-room posture
Porter addressed the stalled extension talks directly in his first public comments since the deadline passed without a new deal, saying the lack of an agreement is “old news” and that he’s focused on getting healthy.
The contract situation has formed the backdrop to his absence, but Porter said he is not planning to stay away to gain leverage in negotiations and denied reports that he asked to be traded.
The Steelers organization has repeatedly defended Porter during the process, and teammates and coaches have underscored the value of his 6-foot-2 frame in the secondary when he is available.
For Pittsburgh, the calculus is straightforward: reintegrate a talented starter when he is physically ready. For Porter, the coming days of practice and the way his back responds will determine whether that reintegration begins on Sunday or further down the road.
