The Minnesota Vikings have signed free-agent edge rusher Kyle Van Noy, a move that immediately addresses a thin spot on the depth chart and brings a widely traveled veteran into a familiar defensive structure.
Filling an immediate need
The signing comes after the Vikings lost a planned backup option when undrafted second-year player Tyler Batty tore his ACL in Minnesota's final preseason game against the Denver Broncos; Batty has been placed on injured reserve. The roster gap widened earlier in the offseason when Jonathan Greenard was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, prompting the team to add reinforcements on the edges.
Van Noy visited the Vikings' TCO Performance Center on Tuesday, an in-person meeting that solidified Minnesota's interest. The club plans to use him as depth behind starters Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, shoring up a rotation that needed experience and reliability late in the preseason.
Tom Pelissero reported that Van Noy will begin on the practice squad as he ramps up with the team, a path that gives the Vikings roster flexibility while making the veteran available to contribute when needed.
What Van Noy brings to the defense
Experience is the headline here. Van Noy has played 7,090 defensive snaps across 173 regular-season games, a workload that immediately raises the floor of any edge group he joins. That volume of snaps means the Vikings are adding a player accustomed to NFL game planning, rotation work and situational substitutions.
Van Noy's career profile includes consistent pressure production and a history of steady sack numbers: in the past seven seasons he topped five sacks in all but one campaign. Even in what the data view as a lighter statistical year, Van Noy generated 27 pressures on 493 snaps and earned a PFF grade of 63, figures that underline his ability to affect the pocket even when sack totals are modest.
Beyond the on-field metrics, Van Noy brings postseason and championship experience. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion and would add veteran leadership and a strong locker-room presence. Those traits translate into a player who can contribute immediately in meetings, practice and on game days.
Scheme fit and the Flores connection
A key factor in Minnesota's pursuit was Van Noy's familiarity with defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Flores coached Van Noy with the New England Patriots and later in Miami, creating a pre-existing relationship and knowledge of Van Noy's tendencies that smoothed the evaluation process. That connection allowed coaches to project how Van Noy's skill set fits the Vikings' defensive calls without a prolonged learning curve.
The immediate familiarity is especially useful given the Vikings' short-term need for dependable rotational help. Van Noy's career has been defined by versatility—able to rush, set the edge and contribute in sub-packages—and Flores' prior work with him gives Minnesota a clearer picture of how to deploy those strengths within game plans.
While the team has its starting duo in Van Ginkel and Turner, Van Noy's presence creates a veteran bridge as the Vikings integrate younger backups and wait for injured players to return. Placing him on the practice squad to start provides Minnesota an avenue to evaluate his conditioning and role in practice before activating him for games, a cautious approach that reflects the club's need to manage snaps and roster spots carefully.
