Experts recommend reinforced stitching, stay on site through kickoff
Field experts for the NFL and the NFL Players Association have been at Maracanã Stadium for days monitoring the playing surface ahead of Sunday’s game between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens. Their assessment found the field needed better traction and stability, prompting a targeted reinforcement plan.
NFLPA executive director JC Tretter said the specialists recommended reinforced stitching to help the turf hold together and brought in equipment to strengthen as much of the field as possible before kickoff. "Based on our experts' assessment, the field needed better traction and stability," Tretter said. He added that the experts "will remain engaged and continue evaluating conditions through kickoff."
Work on the surface has included structural reinforcement and over-stitching to increase resistance and stability, with stadium crews applying fibers and machinery designed to bind the turf more securely. League field staff confirmed those measures were part of the response this week.
Player safety, practice plans and weather context
NFL field director Nick Pappas acknowledged weather-related challenges this month but indicated the situation is manageable and that there have been no conversations about relocating the game. "Nothing that we're not capable of managing," Pappas said in describing efforts to ready the playing surface.
Tretter highlighted the chief concern entering the week: a field that could be "loose, patchy, and lead to excessive slipping." He characterized those conditions primarily as playability and performance problems rather than a significant injury risk, noting the distinction between surface slippage and hazards that more directly drive injuries.

As soon as we lose 'putting the players forward' is when we lose the league. I am sure the league knows that and they are doing their best to put us in the position to be safe."
With reinforced stitching applied and field experts maintaining on-site oversight, league and player representatives have signaled continued monitoring up to game time. Teams will make final assessments during Saturday’s walk-throughs before the Sunday kickoff between the Cowboys and Ravens in the NFL’s first game scheduled for the market this week.
