Nick Bosa Advances in Recovery, Joins 49ers for Key Practice Before Rams Game

On-field progress and medical context

Nick Bosa’s Return Clears a Key Hurdle, but Workload Questions Loom Ahead of Rams Game

Nick Bosa took a visible step toward coming back from last season’s torn ACL by participating in team drills this week and boarding the San Francisco 49ers’ flight to Melbourne for the club’s international opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

That participation marked the first time Bosa practiced with the team since the season-ending injury in September and represented the close of a yearlong recovery process. The 49ers have publicly identified knee tendinitis as part of the soreness that sidelined him during the summer, and the club cleared him to begin training camp and progress from individual work into team periods.

Bosa himself has stressed patience in the rehab process; in May he told the 49ers’ official website, “I’m taking it slow.” After getting through recent team drills, Yahoo! News reported Bosa said, “After today, yeah, that was pretty good,” when asked about his outlook for the opener. Yahoo! News also relayed Bosa’s explanation that a patellar-tendon issue and an acceleration of his football workload roughly a month ago prompted him to pull back and recalibrate his comeback.

Immediate impact on game planning and the 49ers’ front

Even if the 49ers remain cautious, Bosa’s mere presence alters preparations for the Rams. Coaches and opponents must account for a five-time Pro Bowl edge rusher being available in practice and on the trip, and his presence changes how the Rams must prepare.

San Francisco’s front has felt the absence of Bosa. He played only three games last season before suffering a torn ACL, finishing that partial season with two sacks and 17 tackles. His absence has demonstrated how difficult replacing him can be.

That context explains why the 49ers are measured in their approach: Wednesday’s team-period work was meaningful because it represented the first time Bosa operated in those drills without consciously protecting the knee. Whether the knee will respond just as well to a full game workload remains uncertain.

Sporting News noted that uncertainty, and it is a real consideration for how the 49ers will deploy him early in the season. The club can afford to be cautious with Bosa’s long-term recovery, but in the short term his availability — even in limited snaps — reshapes matchups and gives San Francisco both tactical flexibility and a morale boost heading into the Rams opener in Melbourne.
