Rams Acquire Tutu Atwell from Dolphins in Exchange for Jarquez Hunter Ahead of Final Preseason Game

The Los Angeles Rams, hours before their third and final preseason game before the 2026 NFL season, have made a trade with the Miami Dolphins, according to Sporting News reporting on an ESPN tweet from Adam Schefter.

The Rams are sending preseason star running back Jarquez Hunter to the Dolphins in exchange for Tutu Atwell, Schefter reported.

Coming back in this reported trade is Tutu Atwell, a former Rams receiver who won a Super Bowl with the franchise in 2021 and has been with the Rams for the entirety of his five-year NFL career.

What the Rams get

Atwell returns to a familiar setting after five seasons with the Rams during which he caught 105 of 179 targets for 1,535 yards and five touchdowns, a career that included a notable downfield role and an average of 32 yards per reception last season on six catches for the Rams.

In Miami this preseason Atwell didn't make a single catch despite being targeted three times in two games, and he was used in the return game but apparently didn't have much of an offensive role for the Dolphins.

With the Rams, Atwell will slot in behind Davante Adams and Puka Nacua and join Jordan Whittington and Konata Mumpfield in the wide-open WR3 competition in Los Angeles.

What the Rams gave up

Jarquez Hunter arrived in Miami as a preseason standout, running the ball 12 times for 68 yards and a touchdown during a 34-0 preseason win over the New Orleans Saints and posting nine carries for 35 yards in preseason Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Sporting News called this "a fascinating trade from both perspectives," noting that the Dolphins have a barren WR room and a strong RB room, and yet they've just traded from a weakness to add more depth to a position they're most likely set at.

The outlet also wrote that for the Rams, giving up Hunter might not have been too easy.

The move reunites Atwell with the coaching staff and system that used him earlier in his career, and it shifts a promising preseason running back to Miami as the Rams finalize roster looks ahead of the regular season.
