Three decades of home movies become a feature-length portrait
Go Deep: The DeSean Jackson Story compiles an extraordinary archive of home footage into a feature-length documentary that premieres on Prime Video on Thursday, Sept. 24, immediately following the network’s NFL broadcast between the Packers and Falcons. Mandon Lovett wrote and directed the film after poring over thousands of hours of footage to weave years of home video into the finished documentary.
The film is built on material compiled by Byron Jackson, who began recording in 1987 and ultimately accumulated an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 hours of footage. That trove ranges from early youth football and college moments to NFL highlights and scenes from DeSean Jackson’s current life in coaching at Delaware State.
After reviewing the archive, Byron Jackson credited director Mandon Lovett with shaping the decades of home video into a cohesive narrative that reveals previously unseen, candid moments. He discussed the project ahead of the debut on the HBCU Legends Podcast, describing the editing process as one that brought raw, unspoken material to the fore.
A candid look at family, friction and the price of excellence
The documentary does not shy away from personal conflict. It examines missteps and tensions inside the family, including strained interactions with the father figure who appears throughout the footage. Byron Jackson said the father’s insistence on exceptionalism is a through-line in the film: "To be great, being African American, you got to be better than great to be great," he recalled from lines featured in the movie. "Greatness ain't good enough. You gotta walk a thin line."
Those lines are framed by a broader observation about ordinary life and second chances: "Our family is just like anybody else's family," Byron Jackson said, adding that the film aims to show "Greatness is an everyday person with guidance." The documentary candidly explores DeSean Jackson’s missteps and the friction with his father.

One of his signature moments — a 65-yard punt return as time expired to lift the Philadelphia Eagles past the New York Giants in December 2010 — is among the highlights shown in the film.
