Marshall Faulk Discloses Parkinson's Disease Diagnosis, Focuses on Management

Marshall Faulk, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and current head coach at Southern University, announced Wednesday that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Faulk revealed his diagnosis on an Oct. 21 episode of The Caring Neurologist with Dr. Sandeep Thakkar and framed his situation as one he has been able to manage thanks to early detection and treatment.

Faulk said the first inkling that something was off came while playing golf, when he felt a rigidity in his hand after extended practice or play. “The rigidity in my hand, just sometimes after I play a lot or I practice a lot,” he said, describing a sensation he initially dismissed as normal nerves when putting.

He first noticed problems while playing golf and has said he keeps an eye on the “little tremors” he gets, as well as his balance and gait. Faulk called himself “one of the lucky ones” for catching the disease early.

Faulk also told listeners he has been navigating the condition for roughly 18 months, giving him time to adjust treatment and monitoring routines while continuing his day-to-day work.

Management, symptoms and life as a head coach

Treatment has focused on medication and vigilance. “Since I’ve started on the medication, I don’t really have a lot of issues,” Faulk said, noting that the condition has not meaningfully worsened and that he is doing more now than before the diagnosis.

He described only “little tremors” and said he pays close attention to his gait, balance and ability to walk, particularly when working out or on the sideline. “The little tremors that I get, you know, they are what they are,” Faulk said. “I just pay attention to my gait, while I walk, when I’m working out, my ability to balance. It’s still where it is.”

Faulk emphasized that the disease has not affected his thinking. “My brain’s fine,” he said, adding that he feels clear of thought — a comment he framed as fortunate whether attributable to treatment or age. That clarity, he said, has allowed him to continue in a major role as a college head coach despite the physical symptoms.

Using his platform to push for education and affordable care

Beyond describing his own experience, Faulk intends to use his visibility to push for broader change. He said he wants to advocate for more affordable healthcare options and greater education about Parkinson’s disease, tying that mission to his belief about the importance of early detection.

“The earlier you catch it, the better chance you have at living a better quality of life with medication compared to if you catch it later,” Faulk said, explaining why detection matters in practical terms for patients’ daily lives.

Those comments framed his advocacy as rooted in personal experience: by identifying symptoms early and starting treatment, Faulk said he has been able to maintain an active professional and personal life while managing the condition.

As Faulk moves forward publicly with his diagnosis, his message has centered less on alarm than on management and awareness. He outlined a routine of medical follow-up and self-monitoring — watching tremors, balance and gait — and expressed gratitude for the ability to keep coaching and stay engaged in his work.

For now, Faulk’s account is focused on practical steps and public education: recognizing early signs, consulting medical professionals, adhering to treatment and pressing for accessible care so more people can receive timely diagnoses and interventions.
