Vikings' Aaron Jones Faces MRI After Knee Injury in Colts Game

Immediate status and testing

Aaron Jones Leaves Vikings With Knee Concern; MRI, Backfield Plans Await

Aaron Jones aggravated a lingering left-knee issue late in Minnesota’s 16-10 victory over the Indianapolis Colts and did not return to the game, head coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed after the win.

Jones absorbed contact on a 17-yard gain in the fourth quarter and exited after finishing the day with eight carries for 26 yards and one catch for no gain. Earlier in the season he had carried an elevated workload and produced several strong outings, including multiple 100-yard games.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio reported that Jones is scheduled for an MRI on the knee this week. Team officials are hopeful the setback will not keep him out for an extended period, but the imaging will be decisive in determining whether any additional structural damage exists.

How Minnesota can respond

Jordan Mason, who returned Sunday and carried 15 times for 68 yards, remains a factor in the rotation but is on injured reserve after suffering a thumb injury in Week 1. Team references indicate Jones has shouldered an elevated workload since Mason went to IR.

Vikings staffers say they hope Jones can avoid a lengthy absence, but if the MRI reveals more significant damage the club would likely lean more heavily on Mason once he’s eligible or reconfigure the depth chart to compensate. That outcome would shape Minnesota’s immediate rushing rotation in the coming weeks.

With the NFL trade deadline about two weeks away, the knee evaluation could also influence roster strategy. Yardbarker projects the timing adds pressure on Minnesota to bolster its backfield depth ahead of the deadline and noted the Vikings’ upcoming slate includes trips to Detroit and Green Bay plus a Monday-night home game against Buffalo—matchups that could intensify the need for dependable running-room options depending on the MRI results.

Yardbarker also identified Colts running back Jonathan Taylor as a name linked to trade speculation and suggested the Vikings could be among potential suitors if Indianapolis’ posture changes. That scenario remains a rumor and would carry additional cost considerations; Yardbarker projected any deal for Taylor would likely require at least a Day 2 draft pick.

For now, Minnesota will wait on imaging and medical clarification before making personnel decisions. The Vikings improved to 6-0 with the win over Indianapolis, but Jones’ health and the result of the upcoming MRI will determine how the team distributes carries and whether it pursues external reinforcement before the deadline.
