Sean McVay frames availability as a "hope" for Monday night

Aaron Donald's Expected Comeback Injects Optimism Into Rams Ahead of Week 5

Sean McVay said the Los Angeles Rams are operating with the "hope" that Aaron Donald will be available for their Week 5 matchup against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. The phrasing underlines cautious optimism rather than a firm timeline, but it gave the organization and fans a clearer sense of the plan as the club prepares for the short week.

McVay described a "promising" update on Donald's situation, conveying that the team is tracking progress closely and intends to take a careful approach.

What led to the absence and how the Rams handled it

Donald was a surprise addition to the injury report last week with what the team described as a sore back. McVay said Donald picked up the soreness after the game against the Denver Broncos, and that the organization decided to err on the side of caution.

As a result, Donald did not practice during the week and was ruled out for the Rams' Week 4 game versus the Philadelphia Eagles. That absence opened opportunities for others to step in during the game while the team managed Donald's recovery.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported late last week that he understood Donald's issue to be relatively minor and that the team sat him out with the aim of letting it heal and leave him in a better spot long-term. That characterization remains a report rather than an official medical determination.

Why McVay’s language matters now

Using the word "hope" signals the club's intent to be conservative with Donald's return, emphasizing availability as conditional on recovery rather than guaranteed. It also establishes a clear short-term target — the Monday night game — without committing to an outcome.

For Donald, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, any return timeline will be driven by how the back responds to rest and treatment this week. The public updates so far have centered on process and prudence: acknowledgement of the injury's origin, an absence from practice to recover, and steady monitoring leading into Week 5.

McVay’s measured update leaves the door open for Donald to rejoin team activity this week while preserving flexibility to keep him out if the staff feels more time is needed. That balance — between optimism and caution — is the central note of the team's messaging as they head into a nationally televised matchup.
