The Dallas Cowboys have officially recognized the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Association as the collective bargaining representative for the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, clearing the way for formal contract negotiations between the squad and the organization.

Recognition formalizes collective bargaining rights

The voluntary recognition, announced Friday, establishes the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Association — the DCCA — as the official bargaining representative for one of the NFL’s most prominent cheer squads. In a statement, the DCCA said the Cowboys organization voluntarily elected to formally recognize the new union, a step that enables the parties to begin collective bargaining on pay, benefits and working conditions.

Team recognition removes a major procedural barrier: with the DCCA affirmed as the representative, the Dallas Cowboys and the cheerleaders can move into formal contract talks rather than continuing ad hoc discussions. Parties involved have described recent exchanges as meaningful, and both sides are now set to begin bargaining toward a negotiated contract.

Pay fight that led here: a reported 400% raise and years of pressure

The recognition follows a reported 400% pay raise the cheerleaders received ahead of the 2025 season after years of public pressure over compensation. That large pay adjustment and ongoing scrutiny around the squad’s compensation reportedly brought the issue to the forefront and accelerated negotiations over long-standing pay and labor concerns.

Public debate over cheerleaders’ wages is not new; the matter had been framed as a multi-year, even decades-long, problem for the squad. The recent developments — the reported raise and the organization’s formal acknowledgment of the DCCA — represent the most concrete progress to date in addressing those concerns through collective bargaining.

What union status allows and possible ripple effects

With official union representation, the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be positioned to negotiate systematically for pay, benefits and labor conditions rather than relying solely on unilateral team decisions or informal negotiations. The DCCA said the recognition will allow the squad to continue bargaining on compensation and workplace terms, and advocates expect the process to be used to codify standards that extend beyond salary, such as benefits and work protections.

Observers also note the potential broader impact: the move sets a precedent within professional sports for dancers and cheer squads whose compensation and labor protections have lagged behind other team employees. The combination of a large reported raise and formalized bargaining rights could become a model for other performers seeking collective representation.

Details on the timing and scope of bargaining sessions have not been released. The parties have described prior conversations as meaningful, but specific subjects and timetables for negotiations will be determined in the coming weeks as bargaining gets underway.

The recognition marks a turning point in how the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will engage with their employer on employment terms. As formal talks begin, the immediate questions will center on how the DCCA frames priorities — whether the focus remains primarily on pay, or whether benefits, scheduling, and other labor protections figure more prominently in the first contract push.
