Lamar Jackson exited Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills with a right thumb injury on the Ravens’ opening offensive snap, a development that immediately shifted Baltimore’s season and roster plans. Head coach Jesse Minter said after the game Jackson “might even miss the remainder of the season,” leaving the team with urgent short- and long-term decisions at quarterback as the Ravens absorbed a 36-10 defeat and their third straight loss.

Immediate roster ripple effects

The situation escalated when backup Tyler Huntley also left the contest with a toe injury, forcing undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano into action. Fagnano completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and was charged with an interception and a lost fumble in his first NFL appearance as Baltimore managed just 144 total yards in the game. The Bills’ second-half surge turned the contest into a rout and handed Buffalo its third consecutive win.

With two signal-callers injured in the same game, the Ravens made a quick staff move this week, bringing in former Bears offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to fill that role in Baltimore, a hire that includes added play-calling duties. That addition signals the organization is preparing both to shore up play-calling with limited personnel and to recalibrate its offense if Jackson’s absence extends.

Short-term plans, longer-term uncertainty

Minter’s suggestion that Jackson could miss the rest of the season puts the Ravens at a crossroads. Sports Illustrated reported that Netflix NFL reporter Tom Pelissero said Jackson is expected to land on injured reserve, a development that would force roster juggling and potentially accelerate the front office’s search for a veteran solution. Those moves remain unconfirmed by the team.

The club’s quarterback depth already looked precarious after Huntley’s exit; Sports Illustrated also cited NFL insider Adam Schefter reporting that Huntley is believed to have suffered turf toe and will undergo further testing to determine severity. That testing will shape Baltimore’s immediate personnel choices ahead of a Thursday matchup in Jacksonville.

Beyond the current week, Jackson’s uncertain availability reshapes Baltimore’s season outlook. The offense’s inability to move the ball Sunday — producing one touchdown and 144 total yards — illustrated how reliant the roster is on Jackson’s playmaking. Minter’s public acknowledgment that Jackson could miss significant time leaves the Ravens facing pressing questions about whether to pursue temporary veteran depth, lean on young options already on the roster, or make a more significant midseason adjustment.

For now the facts are stark: Jackson left with a thumb injury, Huntley is hurt, and an undrafted rookie provided short-term cover in a lopsided loss. How the Ravens respond over the next 48–72 hours — medical updates, potential roster moves and how quickly they integrate Declan Doyle’s play-calling — will determine whether this is a momentary setback or the start of a larger midseason reconfiguration.
