Video released from a Southlake, Texas, parking-lot confrontation shows Dez Bryant lying on the ground in handcuffs while a police officer points a firearm in the direction of him and two other men. Bryant was cited for "Assault by Contact" and is scheduled to appear in Southlake Municipal Court on Nov. 20, court paperwork shows.

Sequence of the confrontation

Dez Bryant Detained on Ground With Officer Pointing Gun; Cited for Assault by Contact

Bryant says the incident began after he encountered two vehicles he believed were driving recklessly and that the drivers had cut him off at a stoplight. The exchange escalated when all three vehicles ended up in the same restaurant parking lot and a confrontation broke out between Bryant and one of the men.

According to Bryant, the man threatened or insinuated he would shoot him during the argument. Bryant has acknowledged knocking the man’s cellphone from his hand after the man pulled it out to record the interaction, and the man then called police—something Bryant said he encouraged because he wanted the incident investigated.

Video provided by Bryant shows all three men on the ground in handcuffs as an officer points a firearm in their direction. For now, Bryant faces an assault citation rather than an arrest.

Legal status and Bryant’s response

The citation lists the charge as "Assault by Contact." Bryant has characterized his actions as self-defense and is publicly calling for a full review of how the situation was handled. He has questioned whether officers relied too heavily on the cellphone footage and whether the threat he says he faced was fully considered before he was detained in front of his children.

The citation lists the charge as "Assault by Contact" and includes a court date of Nov. 20 at 5 p.m.; Bryant was instructed to appear in Southlake Municipal Court by that date.

For now, Bryant faces a municipal citation rather than criminal arrest, and he has pushed for authorities to examine the entire sequence of events leading up to the police response. The legal calendar will be the next formal step for resolving the charge and for officials to determine whether further action is warranted.
