Late big play and a Broncos mistake decide a low-key offensive day

49ers Grind Out 24-14 Win Over Denver, Extend Unbeaten Start as Fred Warner Calls Out Doubters

The San Francisco 49ers stretched their unbeaten start with a 24-14 victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday in a game defined by defense, a costly Broncos turnover and a handful of decisive plays from Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey.

Both offenses struggled in the heat at Levi's Stadium, but San Francisco turned a fumbled punt return by Marvin Mims Jr. into a short, go-ahead touchdown drive late in the third quarter. Brock Purdy capped that 28-yard series with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel that put the 49ers in front for good.

Purdy and McCaffrey extended the margin midway through the fourth on a 74-yard drive finished by McCaffrey's 1-yard touchdown run. Purdy then sealed the result with a 56-yard touchdown pass to George Kittle with 2:15 remaining.

Purdy completed 19 of 30 passes for 218 yards, avoided taking a sack for a fourth straight game and did not turn the ball over — a tidy stat line that underpinned the 49ers' control of the contest.

Fred Warner frames the start as proof amid lingering questions

After the game, linebacker Fred Warner pushed back on preseason doubts about the team’s age and injury history. Warner told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated — as reported by Bleacher Report — that the 49ers have been playing “with a chip on [their] shoulder” after being underestimated entering the campaign.

“I think that people didn't—I don't know—I guess they didn't really take us very seriously before the season started because we did have a lot of guys who were quote-unquote older, and guys who were coming off of injuries,” Warner said. He added that what separates this group is not only talent but “guys that regardless of whatever we've achieved in this league, we're all hungry to continue to get better.”

Warner also pointed to past postseason disappointments as fuel for the current run, saying he has been “super grateful and blessed to be a part of this organization” and that losses in multiple Super Bowls underscore the limited window teams sometimes have to chase a championship: “So you do realize that you don't have forever with the same group of guys, and you want to make the most of the opportunity.” These comments were reported by Bleacher Report.

What Sunday’s result reveals and immediate implications

The win highlighted two practical strengths for San Francisco: opportunism and ball security. The 49ers converted Denver's special-teams error into points that swung momentum, and Purdy's clean pocket work and turnover-free day kept the Broncos from mounting sustained pressure.

For Denver, the loss magnified the cost of miscues in tight games; the fumbled punt return directly set up San Francisco's decisive score. Offenses on both sides had trouble finding consistent rhythm, and the Broncos were forced into a field-goal decision on a fourth-and-2 during the fourth-quarter stretch of the 74-yard drive that eventually produced San Francisco's second touchdown.

San Francisco's ability to manufacture scoring opportunities in a game without an offensive shootout — and to finish with a long scoring strike to Kittle late — reinforces the 49ers' balance between methodical drives and explosive playmaking.

Short-term projection and the narrative ahead

Bleacher Report projected the 49ers will look to improve to 5-0 when they face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 5. While one game won't define a season, Sunday’s performance reinforced the team’s message: capitalize on opponents' errors, protect the football and close out games with established playmakers.

Warner’s public framing — that the group is hungry and motivated by past near-misses — adds a narrative layer to the unbeaten start. Whether that motivation holds up through tougher stretches will be tested in the coming weeks, but for now the 49ers walked out of Levi's Stadium with another signature result and a reminder that clean execution during tight contests remains a core strength.
