Rodgers seized control and steadied the offense

Aaron Rodgers' Fourth-Quarter Play-Calling Turned a 16-Point Deficit Into an Overtime Win for the Steelers

On Cameron Heyward’s podcast, Not Just Football with Cam Heyward, rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard described a decisive in-game shift: Aaron Rodgers took over play-calling duties in the fourth quarter, delivered a calm, commanding message to the huddle and immediately settled an offense that had been flailing through the first three quarters.

The operational change produced the result Bernard framed. Pittsburgh erased a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit and capped the rally with an overtime touchdown pass from Rodgers to Bernard, an ending that hinged directly on the quarterback’s late-game management and decision-making.

Bernard emphasized Rodgers’ composure as the catalyst, saying the veteran’s demeanor allowed teammates to execute without hesitation. That composure, paired with the switch in play-calling, shifted momentum and ultimately produced the comeback and the win.

Stat line through six weeks and season projections

Through six games, Rodgers has thrown for 1,487 yards (eighth-most in the NFL) and 12 touchdowns (tied for fourth-most). He has also been intercepted five times, a total tied for seventh-most in the league, and has taken 19 sacks — tied for the third-most among quarterbacks, according to Next Gen Stats.

Those numbers paint a mixed picture. Rodgers is operating effectively from the pocket despite difficult pass protection, but efficiency metrics lag: his completion percentage sits at 61.4% (the 11th-worst among qualified passers), and his pass EPA is -48.9, the third-lowest mark among the same group.

Projecting the current pace across a full 17-game schedule yields some striking figures: Rodgers is on pace for roughly 4,213 passing yards and 34 touchdowns. If he reaches those marks, it would represent his most yards in a season since 2020 and his most touchdowns since 2021; the projected 34 touchdowns would also tie Ben Roethlisberger’s 2018 franchise single-season mark. Those outcomes remain projections, not guarantees, and must be viewed in the context of the efficiency concerns and turnover rate.

One particular projection to note: at his current interception pace Rodgers is on track for roughly 14 interceptions over a full season — a hypothetical total that would exceed his seven interceptions with the Steelers in 2025 and would stand as a career high if it materializes.

How the comeback alters Pittsburgh's outlook

The win moved the Pittsburgh Steelers to 4-2, marking the team’s fourth consecutive season with a 4-2 start. Historically, when the Steelers have been 4-2 over the previous three instances, they reached the playoffs — a trend that gives context to how meaningful late-game performances like Sunday’s can be for the club’s short-term trajectory.

Rodgers’ decision to return for what has been framed as a final season came after the hiring of Mike McCarthy, and the pairing has produced enough on-field success to keep Pittsburgh in the mix. Despite the problems the offense still needs to iron out — particularly in completion rate, negative pass EPA and turnover management — the raw production and late-game leadership on display in the comeback provide a practical template for how the team hopes to win tight games down the stretch.

Sports Illustrated has noted limitations tied to Rodgers’ game — holding onto the ball too long at times and reduced mobility — observations that feed into the narrative that the offense will need cleaner play to sustain a postseason push. Even so, the combination of Rodgers’ pocket play, the coaching structure around him and the demonstrated ability to execute a late-game plan gives Pittsburgh a clearer path forward than it had before the rally.

The overtime touchdown connection between Rodgers and Germie Bernard will be replayed by teammates and coaches as an example of how a single internal adjustment — shifting play-calling control to a veteran voice and settling the huddle — can change a game. For now, it leaves the Steelers 4-2, a record that has historically correlated with playoff access for this franchise, and a refreshed sense that close games can tilt in their favor when Rodgers takes command.
