Irma Thomas — the Grammy-winning soul singer, now 85 — returned to the Caesars Superdome to perform the national anthem on Monday Night Football as the New Orleans Saints hosted the Atlanta Falcons in a game that doubled as a 20th‑anniversary remembrance of the stadium's reopening after Hurricane Katrina. Her rendition drew visible emotion throughout the arena and set the tone for the Saints' 23-3 victory in a matchup that recreated the Sept. 25, 2006 contest.

A deliberate homecoming

Irma Thomas' Anthem Turns Saints' Superdome Homecoming Into a Moment of Remembrance

The invitation to Thomas was intentional: she sang the anthem for the Superdome's reopening two decades ago and was asked back by team ownership for the milestone. Monday's presentation was framed as a deliberate nod to that night, bringing a direct line between the original Domecoming and the anniversary ceremony that unfolded under the same roof.

Mike Tirico, who called the 2006 reopening from the broadcast booth, grew emotional while discussing the night during Monday Night Countdown — underscoring how the event remains a shared touchpoint for broadcasters, players and fans alike. The matchup itself mirrored that historic meeting, and the Saints' decisive win provided a celebratory conclusion to the commemorative evening.

The anthem and the crowd

Thomas delivered a powerful rendition of "The Star‑Spangled Banner" that spectators described as moving. The performance was repeatedly framed as a celebration of New Orleans' resilience; tears and watery eyes were noted across the Caesars Superdome as the anthem closed. The Mirror Us called the rendition "stunning," and the atmosphere in the stadium reflected the emotional weight of the anniversary.

Social posts captured in coverage by Daily Express Us amplified that response. One viewer on X wrote, "Irma Thomas performing the National Anthem once again, 20 years later, was a nice touch," adding, "Beautiful anthem." Another user posted, "Ohhhh buddy that National Anthem was emotional!!" while a fan who said they had been on the Gulf Coast during Katrina recalled the 2006 Saints as "the first glimmer of hope after a long, painful year." Those reflections framed the anthem as more than a pregame ritual; it functioned as communal acknowledgment of what the city has endured and rebuilt.

Context in a single night

While the score — a 23-3 Saints victory over the Atlanta Falcons — was the game's immediate outcome, the evening's significance hinged on memory and recovery. The Superdome's reopening two decades earlier followed the destruction brought by Hurricane Katrina, and the 2006 Domecoming has held a unique place in New Orleans sports lore. Bringing back the singer who stood on that stage tied the anniversary to a familiar voice, reinforcing continuity between that hopeful night and Monday's commemoration.

Thomas' status as a revered soul vocalist and Grammy winner underscored the ceremony's intent: to honor the past while recognizing the city's ongoing story. The emotional response from fans, broadcasters and the stadium itself reflected the way sports and music can intersect to mark civic milestones.

Monday's tribute — centered by Thomas' anthem and amplified by recollection of the 2006 reopening — left the Superdome with the impression of a gathering that honored both athletic competition and collective memory. For many in attendance and watching, the moment was less about a single game and more about what the stadium has represented in the two decades since Katrina.
