Terry McLaurin Out for Season After Torn Patellar Tendon; Future with Team Now in Question

McLaurin was carted off the field in the first quarter of Monday Night Football and has been diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon, a season-ending injury that coach Dan Quinn confirmed on Tuesday.

The timing and severity of the injury leave little optimism for a return this season, and the recovery timeline for a torn patellar tendon typically extends well beyond the NFL calendar, placing McLaurin squarely into rehabilitation and long-term recovery planning.

Contract situation and questions about McLaurin’s future

McLaurin signed a three-year, $97 million contract extension in 2025. That deal now figures to be central to roster and salary-cap decisions as the organization evaluates options for 2027 and beyond.

Yahoo! News noted the club that extended McLaurin could save more than $25 million by releasing him with a June 1 designation, citing Spotrac’s projections. That projection, and broader roster math, introduces an immediate financial calculation tied to a player who will be entering his 32nd year next season.

Yahoo! News also raised the question of whether McLaurin’s time with the organization that awarded his 2025 extension has effectively ended, given a combination of the new injury, his age and prior injury history. That concern was presented as an opinion and projection rather than an established course of action.

For McLaurin, the focus will be on surgery, rehabilitation and a return-to-play timetable that can accommodate a major knee tendon repair. For the front office, the decision matrix now includes medical prognosis, guaranteed money remaining on the extension and roster construction ahead of offseason deadlines.

The confirmed diagnosis and the confirmed contract figures frame the immediate story: McLaurin’s season is over, and the financial and roster repercussions of his injury will be a primary consideration for the organization that committed $97 million to him in 2025. How the team balances medical realities, cap flexibility and roster needs in the weeks ahead will determine whether McLaurin remains part of its long-term plans or becomes a cap-driven decision.
