Coaching staff gives clear answer after fourth straight loss

Klint Kubiak Sticks with Kirk Cousins as Starter While Fernando Mendoza Waits in the Wings

Head coach Klint Kubiak made an unambiguous decision public Monday: Kirk Cousins will remain the team's starting quarterback despite a four-game losing streak that stretches through Sunday’s 35-21 defeat to the Rams.

"Kirk Cousins is our quarterback. There is no controversy," Kubiak said as he addressed reporters, closing down speculation that the job would be handed over immediately to rookie Fernando Mendoza.

Kubiak told reporters that Kirk Cousins will remain the team's starting quarterback for Sunday's game and that "there is no controversy" with No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza waiting in the wings; he added, "Eventually, Fernando will play football," and said a switch is not expected in the immediate future.

Cousins’ numbers and recent play underpin the decision

The decision to stay the course with Cousins is grounded in measurable production this season. Cousins leads the NFL with 16 touchdown passes and ranks third with 1,877 passing yards. Through seven weeks he has thrown five interceptions and produced multi-touchdown games in all but one outing.

In Sunday’s loss he completed 26 of 44 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns — a performance Kubiak said “wasn't entirely detrimental” to the club. Kubiak also praised Cousins directly: “(Cousins) is playing at a very high level, and he's got to continue to do that for us to win.”

Cousins himself defended his approach to the competition, saying the situation was much the same as it had been earlier in the year. "Nothing changes in the sense that, if I'm not the best option, then I don't want to be out there either," he said. Cousins added that he would have acknowledged that reality early in the offseason if it had been apparent, and that he views Mendoza as someone "who's done a great job and has a bright future ahead."

What the staff and outside coverage say about a potential switch

Kubiak said a quarterback switch isn't happening in the immediate future and that Kirk Cousins will remain the starter for the upcoming game against the New York Jets.

Some coverage described Kubiak's remarks as clearing the air and said the club could entertain a pivot to Mendoza at some point this season, though not imminently; that coverage also said Cousins' on-field production doesn't, by itself, demand an immediate change.

Those outlets' perspective aligns with Kubiak’s message that the club will manage Mendoza’s introduction on a timetable of its choosing, rather than as a reaction to the current four-game skid.

Where the losses have come from and why Cousins keeps the job

Coverage of the team's recent struggles has repeatedly separated Cousins' play from broader personnel and schematic issues. Sporting News observed that Cousins "hasn't actually been a bad quarterback statistically this season" and highlighted the offense's inconsistencies elsewhere — a sparse running game and defensive lapses have been cited as significant contributors to the losing streak.

Kubiak’s public posture — praising Cousins’ level of play, confirming him as the starter and setting a deliberate timeline for Mendoza's first game — reflects a coaching choice to prioritize stability at the position while trying to address failures in other phases of the team.

Cousins’ stance and Mendoza’s waiting role

Cousins framed his response to the competition in competitive, self-evaluative terms. He said he wants to be the best available option and would not resist a change if that were the case, reiterating accountability for playing time. At the same time he committed to serving as a model for Mendoza, saying he'll "try to go out there and play as well as I possibly can, help us win, and give him a great example to learn from until he does go out there eventually."

Kubiak’s repeated assurances that there is "no controversy" and that Mendoza will not play this week remove immediate drama from the quarterback room, but they also set up an inevitable future decision point: when and if the coaching staff decides to hand the reins over.

The next few games will matter not just for immediate results but for how the staff evaluates long-term direction. For now, Kubiak has bet on veteran production and continuity under center — and on a controlled rollout for Mendoza when the time comes.
