The Miami Dolphins remain mired in an 0-5 start, and the center of the early-season scrutiny is Malik Willis. The team handed Willis a three-year, $67.5 million contract to be their starting quarterback, but five games into the season those investments have yet to produce a victory.

Hafley affirms Willis will start, but the warning is clear

Quarterback Crossroads: Dolphins Winless Start Puts Malik Willis Under the Microscope

Amid whispers about a potential benching for Kyle McCord, Hafley told reporters that Willis is on track to start when the Dolphins visit the New York Jets on Oct. 25. At the same time Hafley made clear expectations have changed: "Malik needs to be better, OK?" he said, adding that the broader message is collective responsibility. "The headline is we all need to be better ... Everything in the pass game has to be better, right? It's the receivers, it's the tight ends, it's the protection."

Yardbarker reported that those whispers about moving to McCord were already circulating before the team's Week 6 bye, but that possibility remains a rumor at this stage. Hafley's public stance — keeping Willis in the lineup for the next game while publicly putting the signal-caller on notice — sets up a short leash: performance across the entire offense must improve, he said.

Statistics paint a stark picture

Willis's early-season numbers underline why patience is strained. He has completed just 56.2% of his passes for 849 yards and two touchdown passes through five games; those totals rank last among starting NFL quarterbacks. He has also thrown four interceptions, a turnover rate that has compounded Miami's scoring struggles.

Advanced metrics mirror the traditional numbers. Willis began Tuesday ranked 24th in the league with a 43.9 adjusted QBR and sat last among qualified quarterbacks with a 68.4 passer rating, per Pro Football Reference. The passer rating and QBR reflect inefficiencies in both decision-making and overall efficiency when Willis is on the field.

One area where Willis has shown a different kind of value is with his legs. He has rushed for 186 yards, the third-most among quarterbacks, but that production has not translated into wins. The rushing totals offer a complementary dimension to his game, yet they have not offset the shortcomings in the pass game or altered the team's results.

Contract, expectations and the economics of patience

Financially, the commitment to Willis carries weight. The three-year, $67.5 million deal includes $45 million fully guaranteed, a structure that was in place coming out of the offseason. Those figures raise the stakes and the scrutiny when early returns fall short of expectations.

Newsweek characterized Willis as "the best quarterback on the free agent market" at the time of the signing — an assessment framed as opinion in coverage of the move. That optimism, paired with the guaranteed money, helps explain why discussions about a change under center have become louder as losses have mounted.

Hafley's comments suggesting the entire offensive unit must improve touch on a dilemma teams face when a costly investment at quarterback underdelivers: can scheme, play-calling and surrounding personnel be adjusted quickly enough to rescue the year, or will the financial commitment force the organization to live with a struggling starter longer than results justify?

Short-term test awaits

The next definitive marker for Willis and the Dolphins arrives Oct. 25 in New York. Hafley has publicly indicated Willis will start that game, setting up a near-term window for the quarterback to respond. For now the facts are straightforward: the Dolphins are 0-5, Willis's passing numbers sit at the bottom of the group of starters, and the team has not yet turned his rushing production into wins.

How the Dolphins respond — whether through adjustments around Willis, a change in play-calling or a reassessment of personnel — remains to be seen. Hafley's insistence that "we all need to be better" frames the challenge as collective, but the spotlight will remain fixed on the man taking snaps when the team resumes play after the bye.
