Announcement ends a 14-year Eagles run

Lane Johnson retires after 14 seasons, puts mental health and family first

Lane Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL after 14 seasons, bringing to a close a career spent entirely with the Philadelphia Eagles. In a message to fans he said he “deeply wanted” to play another year but, after “a lot of reflection,” has decided to step away to prioritize family and personal mental health.

Johnson announced his retirement in a post on his personal X account, where he thanked the Eagles and the fans for their support; another report said he shared the decision in an Instagram post on Tuesday, Oct. 6. In his message Johnson called returning to Broad Street as a World Champion on two occasions “the ultimate privilege” and added, “But Philadelphia will always be home, and I will forever be an Eagle.”

Why he stepped away: mental health and family

Johnson said the decision was driven by changing personal priorities. “Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health,” he wrote, and he emphasized that continuing to focus on his mental health and spending more time with his children and family was now most important to him.

Those priorities mirror a public reputation Johnson built away from the line of scrimmage. Over the course of his career he earned recognition as a mental health advocate, and his retirement message reiterated that the work of tending to his own well-being has become urgent enough to end his playing days.

Saturday Down South noted the post came on his personal X account and reported that Johnson framed family and personal mental health as the deciding factors in his choice to retire.

Career milestones and lasting ties to Philadelphia

Selected No. 4 overall out of the University of Oklahoma in 2013, Johnson spent his entire NFL career with the Eagles. He thanked Jeffrey Lurie and the entire Eagles organization “for taking a chance” on him and said coaches and teammates would remain lifelong friends.

Johnson’s message also touched on his life off the field. He shares three children — David, Journey and McCoy — with his ex-wife, Chelsea Goodman, and the announcement noted he married Kelsey Holmer in April.

Mental health advocacy as part of his legacy

Throughout his career Johnson was increasingly identified as a voice on mental health matters. His retirement will likely renew attention on that aspect of his public life: he framed his exit not simply as a career decision but as a personal health step he needs to take now.

That framing was explicit in his words. Beyond expressing gratitude for the support he’s received, Johnson wrote that focusing on mental health and family will be his priority moving forward — a decision that centers well-being over competition and one that adds a distinct chapter to his legacy in the league.

Reaction and immediate aftermath

Johnson’s announcement closes a notable era for the Eagles’ offensive line. In his post he expressed deep appreciation for Philadelphia’s fan base, calling the city’s supporters the “best fans,” and he thanked the organization for changing his life. He left the door open to defining his role beyond his playing days only by stressing that, for now, his focus must be home and health.

As the team and league absorb the news, Johnson’s decision will be remembered not only for what it means on the field but for how it spotlights the intersection of elite sports and mental-health priorities. His public acknowledgement that mental health deserves the same attention as physical recovery underlines a conversation that has become more prominent across professional sports.
