The San Francisco 49ers left Seattle with a 32-29 victory Sunday, a result that pushed the club to 5-0 and into sole possession of first place in the NFC West by two games. The win — earned in a chaotic, late-game environment — reinforced the 49ers' early-season momentum and raised fresh questions about how Brock Purdy's hot stretch will be viewed in the MVP conversation.

Purdy delivered when it mattered, extending a strong touchdown streak

Brock Purdy again showed his ability to finish games. He engineered multiple scoring drives in the fourth quarter that ultimately decided the outcome, helping San Francisco escape with the three-point victory. Purdy has now thrown multiple passing touchdowns in every game he has played this season, a five-game streak that has become a central talking point as the awards conversation heats up.

The sustained production has measurably elevated Purdy's profile. His consistent late-game performances and the 49ers' undefeated start have pushed him toward the top of the league's MVP odds board, and his overall stock received a significant boost after the win in Seattle. Newsweek projected that, should San Francisco remain unbeaten, it would be difficult for anyone to mount as strong a case for the award as Purdy — a projection that underscores how much weight an undefeated team can add to an individual candidacy.

Supporting cast held the line amid adversity

The victory was not only a quarterback story. Mike Evans played through cracked ribs and served as Purdy's primary target in critical moments, providing a veteran presence and contested catches that repeatedly stalled Seattle's attempts to pull away. Evans' willingness to play through the injury and his role as a reliable downfield option were pivotal in tight moments.

On the other side of the ball, Renardo Green continued to make the kind of plays and coverage that are accelerating his reputation. His performance in Seattle contributed to the narrative that he is rapidly becoming one of the premier coverage corners in the league. A group of younger defenders also stepped up late, helping close out the game in the final minutes as the Seahawks pushed to comeback.

What the win means for the 49ers' season

The win further validated an early-season stretch that has looked routinely dominant: San Francisco has continued its excellent play and now sits 5-0. Securing a road victory against a divisional rival preserved the club's standing atop the NFC West. The margin in the division — two games clear of the pack — leaves San Francisco two games ahead in the NFC West.

Beyond the standings, the game reinforced the 49ers' identity as a team that can win messy, high-pressure contests. The combination of a quarterback who can deliver late drives, a veteran receiving option willing to play through injury, and an emerging secondary that can make pivotal plays gives the team balance in a tightly contested division.

MVP talk: elevated but not settled

Purdy's statistical streak and late-game work have placed him near the top of preseason and in-season award conversations; bookmakers and pundits have taken notice. The early-season narrative — an undefeated San Francisco team with a quarterback consistently delivering multiple passing touchdowns — naturally pushes Purdy into the discussion. Still, observers should treat current chatter as early and fluid: the projection that Purdy's case will become harder to contest if the 49ers remain undefeated is explicitly framed as a projection, and the season remains long.

What is clear is that Purdy's recent performances have significant momentum behind them. The combination of individual consistency and team success has made his candidacy a live topic, and Sunday in Seattle offered another notable chapter in that case.

The 49ers' trip to Seattle will be remembered not just for the scoreboard but for how it highlighted the complementary pieces around Purdy — veteran toughness in Mike Evans and the defensive emergence of Renardo Green — that have helped San Francisco sit atop the division at 5-0. Whether that early-season form carries through will determine if the MVP talk becomes lasting reality or remains an intriguing midseason storyline.
