The decision and its immediate fallout

Nick Sirianni Admits Costly Kickoff Call as Critics Escalate After Late-Game Loss

Nick Sirianni acknowledged after the game that a late kickoff decision directly contributed to a 19-17 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars, saying bluntly, "I didn't make the right decision, and I lost us that game." The sequence was straightforward: with under 10 seconds remaining and a two-point lead, the decision was made to kick the ball in-bounds rather than force a touchback.

The in-bounds kick sailed into the hands of Ameer Abdullah, who returned it 53 yards to set up a game-winning field goal by Cam Little. Elliott later confirmed the plan was to keep the ball in play and "try to make a tackle," a detail Sirianni took full responsibility for in his postgame remarks.

Sirianni's accountability in public remarks

In multiple, direct comments after the loss Sirianni repeatedly owned the call. "I [didn't] make the decision that I should make at the end of that game, and I cost us that one," he said. "At the end of the day, I didn't make the right decision. There's no other way around it." He also acknowledged the emotional sting, saying, "It's gonna hurt for a while."

The coach framed the error as a clear, singular choice for which he accepted blame, rather than shifting responsibility to staff or players. That degree of public accountability has been marked and unequivocal: "I put that fully on me," he said.

Mounting criticism and narrative of endgame miscues

The kickoff decision has drawn sharp scrutiny beyond the immediate scoreboard. An opinion piece said its writer could no longer defend Sirianni's leadership, describing the kick call as one of a series of late-game miscues and writing that the decision "gave away three points" and that "those three points lost the game" — characterizations presented as analysis of the outcome.

Sporting News noted a separate, unconfirmed element: it reported a rumor that Sirianni had faced a similar kickoff decision in London earlier in the season. Sporting News labeled that as a rumor rather than a verified sequence, and the possibility raises questions about whether the endgame approach is isolated or part of a recurring pattern.

The criticism is not limited to column inches. The practical impact is clear: a late, single-call judgment turned a likely win into a loss in a matter of seconds. Sirianni's own words — "I didn't make the right decision" — undercut any attempt to frame the outcome as simply unlucky or the result of execution by others.

Observers have pointed to the cost of a conservative risk-reward calculation in that spot. By choosing an in-bounds kickoff, the coaching posture favored attempting a tackle over eliminating the return possibility entirely. In this instance the gamble produced a large return and a turnover of the game result.

Whether this game will be treated as an instructive outlier or as evidence of a pattern will depend partly on what changes — if any — appear in endgame strategy. Sirianni emphasized personal responsibility and a commitment to learn, but critics are already weighing the loss as part of a larger evaluation of his decision-making in late-game scenarios.

For now the record shows a narrow defeat decided in the final seconds, an admission from Sirianni that he "lost us that game," and growing debate in the media over whether recent head-coach-level calls are costing wins. The coach's pledge to own the mistake sets a clear public baseline; the response from within the organization and the outcomes of upcoming games will determine whether that ownership translates into different choices under pressure.
