Cornell Green, a fixture of the Dallas secondary during the franchise’s early dominant era and later a nearly three-decade evaluator for the Denver Broncos, has died at 86, both organizations announced Wednesday. Green’s playing and scouting careers left a quiet but durable imprint on the league: 13 seasons on the field, remarkable availability, and a scouting tenure that stretched across generations of talent identification.

Career on the field: ironman durability and decorated play

Cornell Green, Doomsday Defense Mainstay and Longtime Scout, Dies at 86

Green’s NFL tenure ran from 1962 through 1974. He appeared in all 182 regular-season games during that span and added 15 postseason appearances, never missing a game in his career. After his rookie year he started 167 of 168 regular-season contests, a level of durability uncommon in any era.

Initially used sparingly, Green started three games as a rookie but became a mainstay in the Cowboys’ lineup for the next 12 seasons and an integral part of the team’s original “Doomsday Defense.” He spent extensive time at both cornerback and safety. During his time with the team, the Cowboys reached their first Super Bowl, losing to the Baltimore Colts.

On the field Green earned significant recognition: four All-Pro honors, including first-team selections in 1966 and 1967, and invitations to five Pro Bowls. From 1965-69, Green and teammate Mel Renfro each received All-Pro or Pro Bowl recognition.

Second act in scouting and lasting legacy

Green transitioned into scouting while still an active player and ultimately spent nearly 30 years as a scout for the Denver Broncos. That long second career allowed him to influence roster-building long after his playing days ended, extending his footprint in the league across decades.

Beyond statistics and roles, Cornell Green’s combination of on-field excellence, ironman availability and a lengthy scouting career frames a legacy of consistent contribution to the game in multiple capacities.

Both franchises acknowledged his passing Wednesday, marking the close of a life spent in professional football and the end of a distinctive two-part career that bridged eras as a player and evaluator.
