The decisive moment in Inglewood

Josh Allen Gets First Overtime Win, Ends Drought as Bills Top Rams 37-34

Josh Allen secured the first overtime victory of his NFL career Monday night as the Buffalo Bills outlasted the Los Angeles Rams, 37-34. The game was settled when Tyler Bass drilled a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in overtime to give Buffalo the lead it would not relinquish.

The win marked a long-awaited milestone for Allen. He secured his first overtime victory, improving his overtime mark to 1-7 in his ninth season.

How the sequence unfolded and why it matters

The game saw a frenetic finish to regulation that carried into sudden death. A late score by Los Angeles forced overtime, and Rams kicker Harrison Mevis had a field-goal attempt blocked by Greg Rousseau in overtime; Allen then led a five-play, 35-yard drive that set up Tyler Bass' 45-yard game-winning field goal.

Beyond the immediate relief of finally getting an overtime result, the victory carries clear implications for the Bills' early-season posture. The win improved Buffalo to 4-1 and put the franchise atop the AFC East by a game. That standing is a concrete effect of Monday’s outcome; it is an observable change in the season trajectory rather than an interpretation of motivation or long-term trend.

For Allen personally, the finish removes a statistical blemish that had followed him into this season. Turning a 1-7 overtime ledger into a milestone victory in the ninth season is an observable career development. It is a fact that will be noted in his record and in how future overtime moments involving Allen are viewed.

Monday’s result also shaped the Rams’ ledger for the week and left the Bills with an early-season statement: a close, pressure-filled victory on the road. The mechanics of the win — a blocked field-goal attempt in overtime, a short drive to set up a 45-yard kick, and the kick itself — are the tangible plays that produced the season-impacting outcome.

In short, Allen’s first overtime win is notable because it ends a prolonged extra-time drought for the quarterback and produces an immediate, measurable boost in the standings for the Buffalo Bills. The win does not, by itself, settle broader questions about the team’s season or Allen’s trajectory, but it does change a specific career mark and improves Buffalo’s position early in the year.
