Fumbles have become a recurring liability

James Cook’s fumble problem threatens to erase big gains as Joe Brady praises — then softens — his stance

James Cook’s explosive playmaking has been undercut by a string of ball-security issues this season. Cook has fumbled four times in the team’s first five games and is already two fumbles shy of last year’s total with a full 12 games remaining.

Those turnovers nearly changed Monday night’s result: Cook coughed up the ball in overtime, a sequence that nearly cost the Bills the game. On the next play, Los Angeles linebacker Nate Landman delivered a perfect punch, forcing a fumble the Rams recovered, and Bills special teams later blocked what would have been the game-winning field goal.

The fumbling has been glaring next to Cook’s production. He’s third in the league with 532 rushing yards through five games, and the rushing attack around him ranks among the NFL’s most efficient — Newyorkupstate reported the team sits first in the league with a 20.42 rushing EPA through five games.

Brady balances praise, accountability and a public walk-back

Joe Brady has been blunt about the stakes. Newyorkupstate reported Brady warned that there must be consequences for repeated turnovers and suggested that if the fumbling doesn’t improve, “the carries are going to decrease.” Brady also emphasized that opponents are starting to game-plan specifically to punch the ball loose and that staff conversations and practice emphasis are needed to address how the problem is happening.

At the same time, Brady has lauded Cook’s running. “He is playing outstanding in terms of how he's running the football right now,” Brady said, adding that he doesn’t want Cook to run timidly. “First off, I don't want James running any more timid.”

Brady said the team will keep working on ball security — “We're going to continue coaching it,” he said — and added, “But I don't want you guys to think that I'm going to stop giving James Cook the ball either.” He also warned there must be consequences if the fumbling continues and that carries could be reduced.

Where the two threads meet

Brady’s comments frame a delicate balance: Cook is both a top producer and a turnover risk. As Brady put it, Cook is “doing so many good things running the football,” but the fumbles “are negating all the positive.”

Practically, that balance means the coaching staff plans to focus on correcting the mechanics and situational details that have led defenders to the ball, while still relying on Cook’s playmaking ability. Whether that approach will prevent future punches-out — or eventually lead to the workload consequences Brady warned about — remains a live question as the season moves forward.
