Jerry Jones confirmed Tuesday that interest is mutual between him and Troy Aikman about a possible return to the Dallas Cowboys, a development that unfolded as Aikman navigates contract uncertainty with ESPN.

Aikman and Joe Buck had been set to enter the final year of their deals with ESPN as the 2026 season began, but the landscape shifted when Buck quietly signed a long-term contract extension with ESPN months ago — a move that reportedly surprised Aikman.

The contract dynamics have left Aikman weighing his options. He has not yet been approached about an extension, and has publicly suggested his time at the network could end after the Super Bowl, raising the possibility of new professional directions once the season concludes.

Jones' comments and what a return might look like

Jones addressed the situation during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, telling hosts Shan Shariff and RJ Choppy that he would be open to bringing Aikman into a “major significant role with the Cowboys” if the opportunity presented itself. “Yes, I could and would,” Jones said.

Jones went on to praise Aikman’s knowledge and work habits, saying he believes Aikman has “basic command and understanding and knowledge of NFL football” and calling him “one of the hardest-working, most focused people that I’ve ever been around.” Jones added that Aikman is “just getting started in his life” and that he thinks “the world of him.”

Those comments came alongside a more speculative note: if ESPN does not offer Aikman a new contract to remain alongside Buck on Monday Night Football, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys might pursue him, a scenario raised in reporting on the topic.

On Aikman’s side, reporting indicates he would be receptive to discussions. In a conversation with an insider, he said he would “welcome any conversation” with Jones and that he “would have a hard time not taking a good look” if Jones believed Aikman could help the team.

Uncertainty without specifics

Jones framed his remarks around Aikman’s qualifications and character rather than announcing concrete plans, saying Aikman is capable of a number of roles and that he would welcome a conversation.

For now, the situation remains in flux: Aikman is reported to be considering his next steps as his relationship with the network evolves, and Jones has left open the possibility of reuniting with Aikman in some capacity should both sides choose to pursue it.
