The Indianapolis Colts host the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium in Week 3 with both AFC South clubs still searching for a first victory. Each team enters the matchup 0-2, turning what might normally be a routine early-season divisional tilt into a pivotal game with immediate consequences for momentum and standing.

Stakes and recent history

Colts and Texans Meet in Week 3 as Both Teams Hunt First Win

With the season barely a fortnight old, the margin for error is already slender. The Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans both sit at 0-2, and the loser of Sunday’s game will face a steeper climb back into contention inside a division that has been uneven through the opening weeks.

The Texans carry recent dominance in the series: Houston has won the last five matchups against Indianapolis dating back to the 2023-24 season, including a 38-30 victory over the Colts in Week 18 of 2025. That string looms large for the Colts, who will want to stop the skid in front of their home crowd.

Sports Illustrated frames this as a must-win for the Texans on the road, noting that a loss would create the risk of a second-straight season-opening 0-3 hole for Houston. The outlet also described the matchup as a game the Texans "need to take advantage of," underlining how quickly early-season narratives can harden when two winless teams meet.

Pass matchups and the C.J. Stroud angle

The matchup sharpens around the passing game. The Indianapolis Colts rank dead last in the NFL in passing yards allowed through two weeks, a troubling figure for a defense that will be tested again by one of the league’s ascending young quarterbacks.

C.J. Stroud enters the game fresh off a big passing performance, recording over 350 yards for the first time since Week 10 of 2023. The Colts’ standing in pass yards allowed sets a clear tableau: Stroud has an advantageous matchup to produce another high-yardage day, and Sports Illustrated projects that a repeat 350-yard outing would mark just the second time in his four-year career he’s posted back-to-back 350-yard games.

How the Colts handle Stroud will be the headline storyline. Their pass-coverage numbers through two games have invited questions, and Houston will look to exploit that vulnerability by keeping its passing attack aggressive and on rhythm.

Houston’s offensive issues and keys for both teams

Despite Stroud’s recent output, the Houston Texans’ offense carries notable problems into Week 3. The unit has allowed seven sacks through two games, is averaging under three yards per carry, and is operating without Collins. Those concrete issues—pressure allowed, a stalled ground game and a missing piece in the backfield—leave Houston in what Sports Illustrated characterized as "a worse spot" offensively.

For the Texans, the immediate fix is straightforward: reduce turnovers and sacks, find ways to generate more consistency on early downs, and get the run game moving to take some heat off the passing attack. If Houston can stabilize the offensive line and create more balanced play-calling, Stroud’s ability to push the ball downfield could magnify the Colts’ coverage problems.

With both teams entering the weekend at 0-2, the stakes are high. The Indianapolis Colts face a major concern: their pass defense numbers demand improvement, ranking last in passing yards allowed through two weeks. Preventing big passing plays will be crucial — allowing C.J. Stroud to pile up yards, as he did when he recorded over 350 passing yards, would be a direct path to another loss.

Special teams and situational football will matter too. With both clubs desperate for a first win, short fields and turnover-margin swings can decide what otherwise might be a tight, evenly matched contest.

What’s on the line

Beyond the immediate 0-2 records, Sunday carries narrative weight. A loss would deepen the early-season hole for either franchise; for Houston, Sports Illustrated notes the specific danger of slipping to 0-3 for a second straight season. For Indianapolis, shaking off a recent series trend and stabilizing a pass defense that currently ranks worst in the league are immediate priorities.

Week 3 offers a clear juncture: both teams enter at 0-2, and whoever comes up short will be stuck in an even deeper hole — for Houston, a loss would mean a second-straight 0-3 start. Between the Texans’ offensive struggles (they've allowed seven sacks, are averaging less than three yards per carry and are without Collins) and the Colts’ league-worst mark in passing yards allowed through two weeks, the game shapes up as a clash of vulnerabilities where execution in the trenches and in the secondary could determine the outcome.
