Seahawks complete signing following Monday workout

Joe Mixon Signs with Seattle Seahawks After Workout, Adds Veteran Depth to Backfield

Joe Mixon has agreed to a contract with the Seattle Seahawks after a workout with the team on Monday, a move that brings an established veteran back into the mix for the defending Super Bowl champions. The signing was first reported by ESPN’s Mike Garafolo, who posted that “The #Seahawks are signing Joe Mixon after today’s workout, source says.”

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald confirmed that Mixon worked out for the team and is in the process of joining the roster, saying Monday that the club is moving through the necessary steps to add him. The team described the pickup as veteran insurance for a backfield that has been stretched thin in recent weeks.

Why Seattle moved: roster strain and short-term need

Seattle framed the addition as experienced depth for a depleted running group. The Seahawks have had to navigate multiple absences in their backfield; Sporting News reported the club is adding veteran insurance and noted their intention to sign Mixon to the practice squad pending a physical.

That projection — that Mixon will initially join the practice squad — has also been reported elsewhere as the likely roster path, with any final paperwork contingent on a medical exam. Coach Macdonald’s comments confirmed Mixon’s workout and the team’s interest in bringing him into the mix, while the organization continues to sort roster logistics.

The Seahawks’ decision to pursue Mixon reflects an emphasis on immediate, proven production while the club manages short-term availability issues. Seattle’s move to sign Mixon comes amid those personnel strains and gives the coaching staff a veteran option they can use in practice and, if necessary, elevate to the active roster.

Mixon’s recent history and comeback path

Mixon arrives in Seattle after a turbulent 18 months. He was traded from the Cincinnati Bengals to the Houston Texans in 2024, where he rebounded with a strong season: 245 carries for 1,016 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, a performance that earned him his second career Pro Bowl selection.

Mixon missed the entire 2025 season with a foot injury and was released by the Houston Texans in March. He worked out for teams this month and is expected to join Seattle’s practice squad pending a physical.

Sporting News and other outlets have framed Mixon’s signing as part of an attempt to reestablish himself after the missed season. The 2024 numbers remain the most recent clear evidence that Mixon can be a high-level contributor when healthy, and the Seahawks’ interest underscores that the club believes he can provide value if he passes his medical review.

Practical details and what to expect next

At least one outlet projects Mixon will land on Seattle’s practice squad pending a physical, which would be the immediate administrative step before any elevation to the active roster. That course — practice-squad signing after a successful medical — has been described as the likely path forward while the team evaluates Mixon’s current health and readiness.

There has also been speculation about Mixon’s potential jersey number with Seattle; Bleacher Report published a rumor that he would wear No. 25, though that detail remains unconfirmed and should be considered tentative until the team issues official roster and number designations.

For now, the practical milestones to watch are the outcome of Mixon’s physical and any official roster transaction placing him on the practice squad or active roster. If cleared, Mixon gives Seattle a defensible veteran option in-game planning and a familiar, experienced presence to stabilize repetitions in practice.

The Seahawks’ signing of Joe Mixon completes a quick sequence: a Monday workout, a coach’s confirmation that the player is undergoing joining procedures, and the team’s public move to add established depth to its running room. How Mixon fits into Seattle’s game-day plans will depend on the medical evaluation and how quickly he can integrate into the Seahawks’ offense.
